The Challenge
One budget. Two app stores. Zero compromises.
The client — an experienced personal trainer with a growing online following — had a vision: a fully personalised coaching app that could sit alongside the big fitness platforms on both the Apple App Store and Google Play. The problem? Building two separate native apps (Swift for iOS, Kotlin for Android) would have cost nearly three times their budget and taken the better part of a year.
They needed personalised workout plans with video demonstrations, real-time progress tracking, push notification reminders that actually got opened, and a gamification layer to keep users coming back. Oh, and they needed it launched in time for the January fitness rush.
Our Approach
One React Native codebase. Two flawless app experiences.
We chose React Native not as a budget shortcut, but as the right architectural decision. A single, expertly engineered codebase gave the client a native-quality experience on both platforms — same performance, same polish, dramatically reduced cost and timeline.
We built a custom video player optimised for mobile data conditions, a progressive workout plan engine that adapted difficulty based on user performance history, and a push notification system with intelligent scheduling (sending reminders when each user was statistically most likely to open them). The gamification layer — streaks, achievement badges, weekly leaderboards — was built in from day one, not bolted on as an afterthought.
The entire build, from signed contract to App Store and Google Play approval, took 14 weeks. The January launch window was hit with a week to spare.

Within three months of launch, MyFitnessCoach had surpassed 10,000 downloads across both platforms and earned a 4.8-star rating on the App Store — a score that put it in the top tier of health and fitness apps in Australia. Thirty-day user retention hit 68%, well above the industry average for fitness apps in the same category.
The client has since expanded the platform with a premium subscription tier, and the codebase we built is handling the growth without a single architecture rewrite.
